The original concept was to find a place where Scott and Phil could create their art with out the worries of turning their home floors in to Jackson Pollock tributes.
After searching for a few months, they found their current location. They began brainstorming about how to use the space. During the process they decided it should be shared with other artist.
Artist would work in a common area. No walls but a space would be carved out for each of them. They could talk, share ideas, collaborate or work independently. Why not give each artist their own enclosed space to use? They would explain it like this.
Phil and Scott have worked on many projects over the years. Through it all, they have discovered one thing that works best for them. Working independently but in close proximity increased their creativity. They would talk freely about their projects so that each other could give ideas on the others piece. Some were good and some bad yet always productive in getting the creative process flowing again. They decided this should be the foundation of the studio.
They next obvious thing to do would be put in gallery space to share the studio artist work with the public as well as local, regional or nationally known artist. So out came the wood working tools and they began to create everything from pedestals to platforms to display the art. It was decided a wall would not be built between the gallery and the artist. The process of making art is something rarely seen by the public and sharing the experience is a big part of SquidFoo.
Scott and Phil decided they needed some one to be the curator. That’s where Rachel Stirewalt comes in. Her experience includes starting and maintaining Art Landing, the largest privately owned art gallery and studio in Dallas Texas. With her skills operating an 11,000 sq. ft. gallery and helping with events like the Deep Ellum Art Festival we feel she is the best person for us.
Finally they decided that if they were to allow the public to watch the art being created, they should give them the chance to work with the artist to make art. So hands on art learning events were the final addition to the gallery. Events would range from getting your hands dirty with paint or clay to learning how an artist creates in his preferred medium.
